For my final in Speech class:
I hereby tender my resignation as a student of Summit High School.
With only 7 days left of my public education career,
I hope that you all will join me in remembering some of the good times I have experienced here.
From the apples of knowledge from which I lessoned,
To the halls of learning, always crowded with freshman,
From the cafeteria—where I never once ate,
I’ve heard say that the food there isn’t so great.
My time spent here at summit high
Has been altogether dry…
But dry in a way that you think not;
Knowledge is something I’ve always sought.
I’d rather spend a day at SHS
Than out in the world to face this new kind of test.
So whenever life has put me down,
And society has me locked and bound,
I’ll break those bonds and return to this place,
To relive the great times and challenges I’ve faced…
Since long ago in my freshman year,
I have enjoyed a colorful array of teachers here.
From Mrs. McClain with verbs so strong,
To Mr. Barth, with his Drop Kick Murphy’s song.
There’s Mrs. Yankowski who’s changed a bit,
I think that she’s quite happy with it.
And the wrath of Graf I’ve known but thrice!
Will she ever learn to be nice?
There’s Mrs. McClain, who I mentioned before,
Her raven will forever quoth, “Nevermore.”
And Mrs. Reinking, who associates with freshman only,
I’m guessing that she gets quite a bit lonely.
Mrs. Oaks and Mrs. Oliver, Mr. Blake and Mr. Happy,
I know that you probably think I’m being a little sappy,
But if you think hard enough, I know you’ll find,
That you—too—are grateful for teachers of this kind.
You know the ones that I’m talking about,
The ones that remove all of your doubt
That you’ll ever learn any important information,
From physics, or French, or your chemistry examination.
To be truly honest, I know I’ve learned more,
Than I ever thought that I had in store.
When I first walked in to this building of brick,
Just the thought of an essay made me a little sick.
But now I’m a different person for sure,
Although the last seven days seem hard to endure,
An essay no longer in me inflicts fear,
And I can even write quite well, so I hear.
I mean, look at me now, I never would have supposed,
That I’d be writing a speech this long—all in prose.
Although I must say, I wish less was the time limit,
If I’m on the right track, I’m at about two-and-a-half minutes.
With the rest of my time here with you today,
I’d like to discuss the things that have made high school great.
More than teachers, and lessons, and left-over lunch,
The people I’ve met here have helped me a bunch.
I know that you’re skeptical, please forgive me for this,
There have been many times when people have made me quite pissed.
But let’s please forget those times of high stress,
It’s all water under the bridge, for that I can attest.
I can surely remember many a time,
When I had lots of fun with the class of ’09.
For example, last year at the homecoming game,
After the streaker incident, I was never quite the same.
And the rugby team winning two times here in state,
Unfortunately at nationals they didn’t play so great.
Still clear is the memory of my first airband experience,
Mrs. Oliver’s jokes the administration mistook as serious.
Since then there have been many great airband shows,
From us-tube, to Tony Madonna who basically proposed (and was denied by the way)
From homecoming and prom, to advisory class,
The class of ‘09 has provided many a laugh.
So for the sophomores and juniors and senior class too
The next time you think that you’re time here will never be through,
Just remember the good times, and you’ll soon recognize,
That your time here at school really does fly.
So always remember that high school’s the best,
As long as you don’t include all the drama and tests.
Without me, I know that nothing will change,
If more than 2 people missed me, I’d find it quite strange.
But even with that in mind I must say,
That I will miss at least one of you everyday.
Although in far away Europe, for that’s where I’ll be,
I’ll send postcards and e-mails and letters oversea.
But despite all I’ve said about memoirs and school,
The future I have in store is quite cool.
I thank you for the great times that we knew,
Though I can’t promise I won’t be laughing at you.
